Abstract

Caregivers play an important role in the implementation of health behaviors in the home and providing an environment in which healthy habits can be developed. Caregivers of children who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder or a neurodevelopmental disorder are more likely to have increased stress and sleep issues which can negatively impact their parenting. This negative impact on parenting can have detrimental effects on the youth’s BMI and health behaviors. Healthcare providers will need to assess caregiver’s barriers to implementation of health behavior changes so that adequate supports can be provided to the caregiver increasing the successful implementation of health behavior goals.
