Abstract

The centrality of the imperial state in the public affairs of Bohemia was nonetheless underscored during this period, which was bookended by the press laws of May 18, 1848, and March 13, 1849. The first press law established greater guarantees for publishers, thus unintentionally encouraging them to take greater risks in the publication of more radical periodicals. The general moderation of the period, however, remained, with the public generally refusing the calls of the proponents of more radical political changes. March 1849 would mark the end of the “revolutionary year,” but the new press law of that month nonetheless constituted a significant departure from the practices of the Vormärz.
