Data Interpretation in Anesthesia

Abstract

Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) incorporates an extracorporeal circuit to provide support. This produces a motionless, bloodless field to facilitate cardiac surgical procedures. Blood from the right heart is drained passively via cannulation into a reservoir. It is then passed through an oxygenator or gas exchanger, filtered, and then returned to the arterial system. The CPB machine has facilities to warm and cool the blood. Certain other functions like hemofiltration and hemodialysis can also be done while on cardiopulmonary bypass [1].
