Abstract

The mitral valve is a complex three-dimensional structure which can be difficult to image with two-dimensional echocardiography due to variations in anatomy, annular shape, and surrounding cardiac structures. Accurate imaging of the mitral valve is critical in assessing the etiology, extent and severity of mitral valve disease, as well as in devising and carrying out an appropriate surgical plan. Three-dimensional imaging of the mitral valve is becoming increasingly crucial in the perioperative evaluation and management of mitral valve disease.
