Abstract

Pneumothorax is an accumulation of air within the pleural cavity and outside the lung. There is increased intrathoracic pressure and reduction in venous return to the heart which may result in decrease in cardiac output. Hypoxia results from increased shunt. There are three types: spontaneous, traumatic, and tension. Most patients with pneumothorax of more than 20% of the pleural volume require chest tube placement. Tension pneumothorax is a medical emergency needing prompt intervention.
