Part of the book series: Children’s Well-Being: Indicators and Research ((CHIR,volume 16))

Abstract

This chapter begins by presenting paradigmatic changes in recent years, related to ecological and complexity theories. Within this context, on the one hand, the studies on Multidimensional Well-Being that were developed in recent years (2011–2016) in Europe and the United States are included, observing the evolution of theoretical and dimensional aspects, as well as the instruments developed in the multidimensional approach. On the other hand, the analysis of Latin American studies brings to the front the need to overcome the limitations of traditional methods of assessing well-being and poverty that are generally income-based, and tend to neglect the fact that individuals experience well-being as entire human beings and not as fragmented humans. The authors propose a model of Multidimensional Well-Being, based on the dimensions of subjective, psychological, psychosocial and socio-community well-being. The indicators of each dimension are developed based on the empirical literature and research carried out by the authors and the Research Group in Community Psychology, UFRGS (Brazil). The impact of social and economic determinants in situations of social inequality and poverty is discussed, as well as the psychological and psychosocial effects that these conditions have on people in these contexts. New studies are needed to contrast the proposed Multidimensional model, as other models may emerge that integrate physical, psychological, psychosocial, social and community aspects.
