Abstract

The integration of large scale renewable energy will supply clean energy to customers, but at the same time, it also brings tremendous challenges for the stability and security of the power system. China is the country with the largest installed wind capacity and the largest annual electricity generated from wind energy in the world. Due to the uneven distribution of the renewable energy resources and the load centers, the development of the renewable energy in China is following the pattern of large-scale centralized exploitation and long-distant transmission. This development pattern has resulted in various challengers for power plants and power grids, such as high curtailment, frequency regulation and system stability. In this chapter, the development status of the renewable energy in China is introduced first. Then the wind energy is used as an example to illustrate how the integrated large scale renewable energy impacts the three-defense-line of the power system. And finally, the stability control technologies for wind and solar power are presented, and their application details are given. These control technologies ensure the secure and stable operation of power grid in China after integrating large scale renewable energies.
