Abstract
This chapter briefly surveys the ways in which Donne’s writing has entered the imagination, language, and writings of poets from the early twentieth century to the present as context for the underlying question of the volume: what is it about Donne’s writing that evokes this felt presence even when he is not specifically cited or even alluded to. It charts a path through the subsequent chapters of scholarly investigation and meditation, and through the original contributions of the contemporary poets assembled here.
