Abstract

Elizabeth I’s unexpectedness preceded her birth in 1533, resumed from her bastardization in 1536 through her accession in 1558, and influenced her policies throughout her reign. As a moderate Protestant, she remained an unexpected and unaccepted heir to Catholics who preferred her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots and to Puritans desiring further reform of the church. This, combined with her refusal to marry and her unwillingness to name an heir, led to Catholic plots, sectarian rejection of the royal supremacy, and war with Spain . Perhaps most unexpected is that Elizabeth survived these threats, as well as her councilors’ and parliaments’ expectation that she would bend to their will, to be celebrated as England’s greatest and most successful monarch.
