Abstract
This is an account of one’s experience of taking care of a child with a diagnosis of a rare congenital genetic abnormality resulting in multiple developmental disabilities in the moderate to severe range. It provides a glimpse into how an individual cultural and socioeconomic background as well as personal preferences in conjunction with available societal services in three locales in the US led to choices, decisions, and planning for a single family. Life experiences shaped opinions that are intended to help providers and policymakers address issues that are not limited to disability but are related to the success of the existing support structures and quality of life of everyone directly involved.
