Abstract

This chapter considers the place of the rising time schemes within Babylonian astronomy. It argues that the schemes should be seen as part of the tradition of ‘schematic astronomy’ which developed out of the early astronomical text MUL.APIN. By situating the rising time schemes within the schematic astronomy tradition, it is possible to suggest that the purpose of the rising time schemes was not, as has previously been assumed, to provide a means to calculate the length of daylight, but instead to provide a description of an astronomical ‘fact’. The adaptation of the rising time scheme to a zodiacal framework demonstrates that the schematic astronomy tradition is less rigid than might be supposed: instead, near concepts and ideas were assimilated within the traditional framework of schematic astronomy.
