Ion and Atom Impact Excitation

Abstract

The first case studies on ion- and atom impact excitation are the examples of scattering angle-differential \(\mathrm{S \rightarrow P, D}\) excitation, and electron transfer studies, in which radiation from the final state is polarization analyzed. This is followed in Sect. 8.2 by a discussion of angle-integrated initial-state and final-state alignment studies using targets in optically prepared P states, and by a description of angle-differential studies using optically prepared targets in Sect. 8.3. Section 8.4 addresses \(\mathrm{P\rightarrow P}\) electron transfer processes, in which radiation from the final state is also polarization analyzed. A comprehensive review of results up to 1996 can be found in Andersen  et al. (Phys. Rep. 278, 107 (1997) [1]). Some recent developments are described in the closing Sect. 8.4.
