Abstract
In this chapter we cover the basics of estimating breeding values from field progeny test data for half-sib family selection. The individual level or ‘animal’ model is introduced to demonstrate prediction of individual breeding values across generations. Modifications to the basic model are considered, such as maternal effects and genetic group effects.
