Abstract
This chapter examines the notion of gendered mobility among warring inner-city communities in Tripoli, Northern Lebanon. Recurring clashes between Bab al-Tabbaneh, a Sunni-majority quarter, and Jabal Mohsen, an Alawite area, have resulted in high levels of insecurity for all residents. The army deployment and militarization of public space limits the mobility of the civilian population, placing great strains on frontline families who are imprisoned inside their own homes. The inner-city conflict deeply affects women, especially those in mixed-confessional marriages: due to the conflict, such couples must live in separate parts of a divided city. All suffer from pent-up stress and anger as they try to overcome frontiers and barriers that inscribe social conflict in physical and psychological terms and delimit mobility and social activity.
