Abstract
This chapter presents the case of a critically ill child with acute kidney injury (AKI) who requires continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT).
The chapter discusses the rationale behind the choice of CRRT, including a summary of the indications for CRRT in the setting of AKI. Clinical goals, potential complications, and criteria for successful therapy are also presented, including a discussion of the decisions regarding choice of CRRT device, hemofilter and tubing, priming of the circuit, blood pump rate, infused fluids, anticoagulation, fluid balance plan, and mitigation of complications. Recommendations are given for criteria that can be used to determine when CRRT can be successfully discontinued.
