Abstract
To help their child problem-solve, it is essential for parents to recognize and accept that the child has stressors. This can be challenging because the parents often are not psychologically minded, might be unaware of the child’s struggles, and/or do not know how to help the child problem-solve. They might misinterpret the child’s avoidance of problem solving as being lazy and think that the child’s request for help is a way to get attention or be manipulative. Your role in this process is to help the parents recognize and understand the difficulties and stressors the child faces, as well as to give the parents a framework for how to respond using the approaches presented in this chapter.
