Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss topological properties of the nematic director field around colloidal particles of complex shape with homeotropic and planar surface anchoring. We present experiments with colloidal handlebodies, knot- and link-shaped microparticles, Koch-star colloids, spiraling and ribbed rods in the nematics. Theoretical predictions for the topology of a nematic liquid crystal around non-orientable surfaces, such as a Möbius strip, are discussed as well.
