Abstract
Institutions enable and constrain, “directly determining what arrows a firm has in its quiver as it struggles to formulate and implement strategy, and to create a competitive advantage” (Ingram and Silverman, The new institutionalism in strategic management, Elsevier, 2002, p. 20). Institution result from social action and pressures exerted on the institutional frameworks surrounding the actors. Drawing from different streams of literature, this chapter reviews theoretical contributions highlighting the influence of institutions on organizations.
