Abstract
This chapter is dedicated to the analysis of the peak in planned land invasions, which happened around 1990. Although deeply based on the quantitative analysis of the time series of land invasions, available in Appendix 2, this chapter tells the story of planned invasions in a narrative form, relating it with the recent political history of Uruguay. In particular, it argues that the rising electoral competition introduced in the city by the growth of Frente Amplio, the leftist coalition that took over the city government in 1990 and the national government in 2004, was crucial in motivating planned land invasions.
