Abstract

This article addresses risk issues arising from new procedures of biotechnology like gene-editing, particularly in agriculture. Bioethicists and researchers in agricultural ethics will have to deal with the topic of ecological integrity in science and technology given that culturally developed notions on the dignity of living beings and the need for safeguarding individual lives of animals and plants would be radically challenged. The article highlights potential risks and dangers of synthetic biology, describes novel patents on lives which pose an additional challenge to integrity, and calls for a bioethics of integrity.
