Abstract

In this chapter, teachers, students, and parents who were participants in the history of public alternative schools in Toronto recall their experiences through stories, words of praise and gratitude, critique, warnings, and serious questions. Student voices tell us that the supportive environments offered in their alternative schools encouraged them to figure out for themselves what they wanted to learn. They carry into adulthood a philosophy that has stayed with them.
