Sustainable Value Management for Construction Projects

Abstract

Sustainability goals are becoming more important indices of construction project success. This is as a result of various planning and regulatory standards, especially regarding sustainability issues, that are currently in place for the control and monitoring of construction process and projects by national and international agencies. Moreover, owing to its popularity and necessity, clients and some other construction participants are also demanding its adoption as a major objective of construction projects. In view of this, this chapter explains value management as a construction sustainability tool in the development and delivery of sustainable construction projects. Various factors to be considered before initiating a sustainable value management study are discussed. The suitability of the study for a construction project is also explained by highlighting and discussing various forms of projects that will benefit significantly from its adoption. More so, a sustainable value management model incorporating cost, value, quality, and time around flexible sustainable goals is discussed and the model is related to three elements of sustainability, namely, economic, social, and environmental. Further to this, the necessities, principles, and stages of sustainable value management study are identified and explained accordingly.
