Abstract

In recent decades the literature aimed at supporting postgraduate students in their PhD studies developed notoriously. This paper presents a reflection on managing the PhD process and accomplishing the doctoral thesis, based on this literature and the author’s PhD experience.

The contents of presentations on this topic delivered to science and engineering audiences are first summarized (the latest having taken place at ICORES 2015 and 2016). Feedback from audiences is then described and the most significant issues raised in discussions listed. The concluding remarks reflect on the importance of disseminating this subject among the science and engineering academic community.

Acknowledgements

I am grateful to Professors Ignacio Grossmann, José Machado da Silva, Paulo Portugal and Joaquim Filipe, and to Pedro Marcelino, who invited me to deliver the PhD seminar to different audiences. They played an active role in its dissemination, while motivating me to keep on developing the ideas.

I also thank the many people who contributed with their comments to this reflection, namely Professor Dominique de Werra, who suggested I should look at the subject of “writing the thesis”.
