Abstract
Successful supply chain management of biologics or biopharmaceuticals can bring sustainability to the biotechnology industry. This chapter describes how the supply chain is a process for distribution of manufactured product(s) to the end user through a suitable logistic network, without any change in the quality of the product. For biotechnology and biopharmaceutical products, supply chain activities involve the transformation of natural resources, raw materials, and components into a finished product that is delivered to the end customer.
Microbially derived products such as biopharmaceuticals, enzymes, nutraceuticals, food additives, food supplements, and anti-oxidants are extremely susceptible to environmental stresses and strains, and therefore need efficient and effective logistics from point of origin to point of consumption so that they conform to customer requirements. The authors feel that the supply chain for industrial biotechnology products should have a well-connected network of individuals, organizations, resources, activities, and technologies involved in the manufacture and sale of a product or service. With this in mind, logistic system management has been explained in detail, starting with the delivery of formulated and polished bioproduct to the factory outlet and following its distribution through a proper logistic system to the consumer, with impressive models and photographs.
