Abstract
Arafat offers an in-depth analysis of Egypt coup-proof strategies employed by different Egyptian presidents to control the armed forces. An examination of coup-proof strategies in the Middle East is attempted in order to situate the Egyptian circumstances in a wider context. This chapter draws attention to Mubarak’s coup-proofing strategy that allowed the military to enjoy economic autonomy. This gave them the ability to survive after the removal of the regime and, hence, hugely impacted on their actions as the uprising unfolded. The Syrian and Tunisian uprisings are compared with the one in Egypt to help explain these actions. ‘The President and the Field Marshal’ concludes that it was Mubarak’s own coup-proofing strategy that contributed to the end of his regime.
