Abstract

Brucella strains produce a single high affinity Mn transporter, MntH, and expression of the corresponding gene is regulated by the Mn-responsive transcriptional regulator Mur. Phenotypic analysis of a variety of mutants has shown that Mn-dependent enzymes play a crucial role in the basic physiology and virulence of Brucella strains, and suggest that these bacteria may also be modulate their cellular Mn content as a mechanism to resist oxidative stress.
