Abstract
This chapter constitutes the introduction to the book, outlining the main topics that will be scrutinised in the following chapters. As such, it allows the reader to get a good grasp of the exceptional circumstances in which transitional mechanisms operate, and to acquire some familiarity with the main actors on the field, the conflicting rhetoric and interests, the most common themes and dilemmas which will emerge, and will be addressed, throughout the book.

Notes
- 1.
The field of “transitional justice” nowadays encompasses much more than the mere accountability, and it is organically concerned with a plethora of issues faced by countries in the aftermath of conflicts and authoritarian regimes, such as constitutional reform, disarmament and demobilisation, and memorialisation, just to cite some. However, aiming this book at reconstructing and critically assessing the dominant paradigm of transitional justice as developed on the ashes of Nuremberg, the focus has been restricted primarily, although not exclusively, on instruments providing accountability.
