Abstract
Biosensors are one of the most commonly used devices for the purpose of water/food quality monitoring, health diagnostics and broadly for detection of biological elements like bacteria, virus, protein etc. Water quality monitoring is a prerequisite as deliberate or inadvertent water contamination can cause serious health hazards to the society. The natural resources of water can get contaminated due to natural or anthropogenic sources. Consumption of polluted water can cause kidney failure, fever, prolonged illness and in some cases even death. It is thus of prime importance to know the quality of potable water before consumption. This paper describes various working mechanisms, principles, advantages and drawbacks of the techniques used for knowing the level of pathogenic bacteria in water.
