Abstract

Delamination is the most common damage occurs in the composite structures which reduces structural stiffness of the structure which changes its dynamic characteristics and due to which modal parameters such as natural frequency, mode shapes, damping etc. gets affected. This paper presents effect of delamination size and location on natural frequencies of sandwich composite cantilever beam coupled with piezoelectric actuator on upper skin of the beam. Interaction between various layers of the beam has been modeled using cohesive surface behavior and dynamic responses of the beam are obtained by performing transient analysis using ABAQUS finite element analysis (FEA) software. From dynamic responses, frequency response functions (FRFs) are plotted using MATLAB code. Finally, it is observed that, natural frequencies of the sandwich beam are decreasing after modeling delamination at various locations.
