Musculoskeletal Tumors Following Treatment: Imaging Pitfalls

Pitfalls in Musculoskeletal Radiology

Abstract

Malignant bone and soft tissue tumors require aggressive treatment, which is often a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Even treatment of benign tumors such as aggressive fibromatosis can give rise to extensive posttreatment alterations of the surrounding tissues. In both malignant and benign tumors, local recurrence is common and regular follow-up imaging is required. Interpretation of posttreatment images may, however, be complicated by changes in the affected area. This chapter reviews the imaging pitfalls due to posttreatment changes and how to distinguish these from recurrent tumor. It also provides recommendations for posttreatment imaging.
