The Life and Works of John Napier

Abstract

ALMOST all the documented facts regarding Napier were recorded by Mark Napier (1798–1879) in his Memoirs of John Napier of Merchiston: his lineage, life and times with a history of the invention of logarithms (William Blackwood, 1834). Mark Napier was a descendant of John Napier, being a great-grandson of Francis, 6th Lord Napier. Fortunately for future generationsWilliam, 9th Lord Napier (1786–1834), gave his distant cousin full access to the Napier charter chest where the family records were kept.
