Rural Protest in England

The English Countryside

Abstract

The tranquil countryside has long been pitted against the bustle of the city in the British cultural mindset. Such clichés die hard but are increasingly outdated, particularly since the Countryside March of 2002 put rural protest firmly onto the national political stage. This chapter proposes to analyse the question of protest in rural spaces in England on two levels: firstly, by studying struggles since the nineteenth century to protect and have access to these spaces as well as introduce alternative spatial practices within them. Secondly, by attempting to explain the reasons why rural space(s) and rural identity have become issues of conflict in England in a relatively short space of time.
