Abstract

Iodinated contrast, along with x-ray radiation, forms the basis for visualization of all endovascular procedures. However, contrast has also been much maligned as a cause of anaphylaxis, renal failure and pain in patients undergoing these procedures. Understanding the basis for image production and the mechanisms for adverse reactions will help the clinician in choosing the appropriate contrast agent and to avoid, or manage, the adverse reactions that may ensue.
