Hand and Wrist Injuries in Kick Boxing

The aim of the present chapter is to review the most common kick boxing-related injury patterns. As this is a relatively recent practice when compared to other more ancient disciplines, few attention has been given so far to the specific stresses that it causes to the human body. The possible lesions include both ligament and skeletal lesions, embracing in the first group lesions of the triangular fibrocartilaginous complex, rupture of the scapholunate ligament, volar plate tears and less sport-specific capsular lesions. The skeletal lesions include metacarpal fractures or scaphoid fractures. Applying bandages and following a proper warm-up phase are mandatory for a professional athlete that is interested in preventing these injuries, as well as knowing what should be avoided. This chapter may also interest the clinician that approaches for the first time the world of professional kick boxing to better understand the dynamics of these sport-related lesions.
