Abstract
Ulrich Bröckling from the University of Freiburg studies burnout so as to ‘treat it as a symptom in its own right’; as a discourse which holds a mirror to its society, rather than as a thing in itself. Bröckling specifically analyses the verbal imagery associated with burnout, seizing on basic images of catching light, of being on fire, before moving on to depleted batteries, robotic imagery, and the salmon and hamster, as used to describe different aspects of the social role of the burnout diagnosis. These various objectifications and animisms create the confused picture of modernity: faced with competing explanations from biology and culture, self-help and social entrapment, the burnout diagnosis itself is seen as only the beginning of a complex of recommendations and demands.
