Abstract

This chapter provides an account of bauxite mining, refining and aluminum smelting on the African continent, giving information on each African country involved in the production network as well as mining companies and their history. While several of the implicated countries would have the potential to produce aluminum consumer products out of their own bauxite reserves, mainly due to risk reduction strategies of the involved transnationals and the old industrial centers, no African country has achieved integrated production since the start of industrial mining in the 1950s.
