Abstract
By reviewing current practice, research, and major current projects, this chapter explores a number of technological aspects of contemporary crisis management, in order to synthesize some best practice guidelines for the designers of crisis management platforms. Experiences gained from the European ATHENA Project, in particular, are used to inform the guidelines. Aspects covered include the use of social media, preventing information overload, types of user interface to use, the use of smart mobile devices and applications, and the automated assessment of information credibility and priority.
