Abstract

The regional geohydrological characteristics of a vast oil-and-gas-producing basin are presented for the first time. It is located in the Extra-Andean Patagonian region, and it is characterised by its arid climate, with a marked water deficit, a limited occurrence of watercourses and low population density. The physical context (geology, geomorphology and soils) and the hydrological elements (meteorology, and surface and subsurface hydrology) are described in order to define a conceptual model of the geohydrological system. Its vulnerability is analysed and a management plan is proposed for the water resources and their governance, taking into consideration the great socioeconomic interest of the unconventional exploitation of HCs (shale gas/oil), which has been undertaken recently and offers excellent prospects.
