Abstract

Lower GI bleeding can range from indolent, self-limited bleeds in a hemodynamically stable patient to massive hemorrhage requiring rapid, aggressive resuscitation and expeditious control with endoscopic modalities or operative intervention. Most commonly due to diverticulosis, cancer, colitis, and angiodysplasia, every acute care general surgeon will have to face this problem emergently where surgical approaches are warranted when all else fails. This overview focuses on the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of major LGIB.
