Abstract
Why dedicate an entire chapter for this condition? Undeniably, enterocutaneous fistulas (ECFs) remain a challenging and frustrating problem for patients and surgeons alike, particularly in the era of damage control and open abdomen management which have led to the emergence of enteroatmospheric (exposed) fistulas. The management and techniques continue to evolve and progress as wound care devices improve, nutritional access is optimized, and surgical techniques refined. This chapter discussed the etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and complicated management of these often vexing situations.
Every fistula is different; tailor your approach.
