Abstract
Based on geographic location, the incidence of volvulus of the colon may vary significantly. In westernized nations, 10–15% of colonic obstruction cases are attributable to volvulus. In nonwesternized nations, volvulus causes 20–50% of all intestinal obstructions. The difference in incidence is due to the difference in occurrence of predisposing conditions which include immobility, institutionalization, dietary, and hormonal factors. This chapter discussed the two most common areas affected by colonic volvulus, namely the cecum and sigmoid colon and their very different diagnostic features and approach to management.
