Abstract

Anorectal emergencies may not lend the acute care surgeon the glory and bravado yet are very painful and debilitating conditions that frequently require a simple surgical solution that can offer relief. Acute perianal pain is almost exclusively attributable to thrombosed hemorrhoid, anal fissure, or anal abscess. This overview focuses on the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of all three problems.
