Abstract
This chapter outlines the book and introduces the reader to the concept of individual security. Contextualizing this book in the current security debate and the literature, this chapter explains the myth of authoritarian stability and shows how Western literature in particular has been too preoccupied with the normative, prescriptive debate on liberal democracy while failing to understand the key grievances of Arabs. Here, the chapter provides a point of departure for the approach taken in this book.
