Abstract
This chapter is devoted to a discussion of network governance, adopting a dynamic perspective on how networks act, change, and can be governed. To do so it examines network dynamics and evolution, and then introduces the key issue of coordination mechanisms. The concept of network trajectories is discussed through the explanation of two ideal types of network process: serendipity and goal-directedness. An innovative connection between network trajectories and individuals’ agency is proposed using the literature on social movements, referring to the concepts of cognitive frames, framing and mobilizing practices. A discussion of the complex issue of network performance concludes Part I, presenting an innovative framework about effectiveness and failure.
