Abstract

In Hayek and Mises’ Vienna, Freudian psychiatry flourished—‘it was through psychiatry’ that Hayek ‘got to the problems of political order.’ As Hayek visited New York (1923–1924), the Austrian-born Edward Bernays helped integrate Freud’s theories into the producer-sovereignty-seeking advertising and public relations industries—there are clear parallels between Hayek’s and Bernays’ style of propaganda.

Both Left- and Right-Freudians sought ‘liberation’ from sexual repression—and there are similarities between the cult-like reception that the Right-Freudian Mises and the Left-Freudian Wilhelm Reich received in the United States. Between Austria and Chicago, Hayek encountered ten competing schools (market failure, Keynesian, Neoclassical Synthesis, post-Keynesian, Galbraithian, Beveridge-inspired, Stockholm or Myrdalian, market socialism, stabilisation rules and Marxism) and in Gibraltar in 1944, illustrated what The Road to Serfdom meant in practice.
