Abstract
The 1974 Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences revived the almost-moribund Austrian School. Within six years, two Austrian-influenced radicals—Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan—won major election victories. This chapter examines others who were Austrian-influenced—including the John Birch Society, ‘redneck’ militia groups, white supremacists, theocrats and Adolf Hitler—and asks whether the Nobel Prize has had a detrimental effect on the economics profession.
