Abstract
For some time, purposeful integration of the family into adolescent residential treatment has been correlated with positive and long-lasting outcomes for those treated in these settings. Family workshops are a key aspect of family integration attempts and provide a unique opportunity to create second-order change in the family system . However, conducting family workshops requires the clinician to confront unique challenges, and many clinicians feel unprepared to develop and facilitate family workshops. This chapter attempts to prepare clinicians for this type of work by first reviewing relevant literature on family workshops and adolescent treatment. Second, by drawing on family systems theory and the author’s experiences as a therapist in two residential treatment centers , a structure for family workshops (i.e., preparation , reunion, and separation phases) and sample interventions are proposed. Finally, special considerations when delivering family workshops, such as the timing of the workshop and typical family and group dynamics, are discussed.
