Abstract
This chapter summarizes the contents of the book State-Owned Multinationals: Governments in Global Business, which provides an overview of our current understanding of the behavior of state-owned multinational companies (SOMNCs), or companies that are owned by the government and that have value-added activities outside their home country. The study of these firms can yield interesting insights as a result of the changes in their ownership and their foreign expansion. These changes challenge our conceptualization and understanding of both current explanations of state ownership as well as the models of the multinational. The book contains a selection of the key contributions to our comprehension of this phenomenon published in Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), the leading journal of international business research; as well as new material that provides detailed explanations of the phenomenon.
