Abstract

Flight-critical structures can be subjected to blast or shock loadings, e.g., during conflict situations or during supersonic flight operations. It is therefore necessary that structural behavior of the materials used be well understood in such extreme environments. The Background Oriented Schlieren (BOS) technique is applied to study the reflection of shockwave over an inclined aluminum plate in tandem with the 3D DIC technique to study the full field deformation of the back face of the aluminum plates. The mathematical formulation of the BOS technique is used to observe pressure and shock wave fronts. Back face DIC of the aluminum plates can be correlated to the BOS data at the same time and hence providing a more comprehensive way to study fluid structure interaction during a shock wave reflection.
