Abstract

This chapter explores the challenges posed by modernized and commercialized notions of Irishness to Irish-Argentine descendants through the conversations of Irish dancers and musicians. It traces the evolvement of Irish traditional music playing and Irish dancing in Argentina and accounts how issues of authenticity and belonging frame the emergence of style practices in Irish music and dance. Thereafter it reflects on the sentiments of ethnic exclusivity that continue to pervade the Irish-Argentine consciousness and makes suggestions as to the potential eroding of these boundaries into the future.
